Just after 4am, officers responded to the 5100 block of Wells to investigate a ShotSpotter Activation. When officers arrived, they located an adult man who was found shot on the front porch of a residence. The man died on scene.

Homicide detectives responded and started to investigate. Detectives requested ATF to assist them. Officers and detectives surrounded the home and secured the perimeter while they awaited a search warrant.

Around 7:00am, a man who was inside the residence came outside and had a brief conversation with detectives before reentering the home. Moments later, the man exited the home, a second time, armed with a rifle.

One SLMPD officer and one ATF agent exchanged gunfire with the suspect, before the suspect retreated back into the home.

As SWAT entered the home they located the suspect dead near the front doorway. SWAT cleared the rest of the house where they found a woman dead inside the living room and a man dead in the basement.

No officers or agents were injured.

The SLMPD officer is 28-years-old with 3 years of service.

All of this information is preliminary as Homicide detectives and the Force Investigation Unit continues the investigation.
