Major Mary J. Warnecke

Commander - Investigative Services

Major Warnecke joined the Metropolitan Police Department, City of St. Louis in 1979.

Major Warnecke’s 34-year career is comprised of investigative experience as well as administrative experience. Major Warnecke held various district assignments from 1979 until she was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 1993. From 1993 to 1997, Major Warnecke supervised officers in District Four, and was a Detective Sergeant of the Child Abuse Unit in 1997. Major Warnecke was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 1997, where she was the Deputy Commander of the Sex Crimes/Family Violence Unit. Major Warnecke served as a District Lieutenant as well as the Academy Director from 2001 to 2003.

Major Warnecke was promoted to the rank of Captain in 2003, and served as the Commander of the Second, Fourth, and Sixth Districts from 2003 to 2013. From 2013 to 2015, Major Warnecke served as the Commander of Special Operations Division, until she was appointed as the Commander of Investigative Services. Under this position, Major Warnecke lead the following Divisions: Homicide, the St. Louis Regional Bomb and Arson Unit, Sex Crimes, Child Abuse, Domestic Abuse Response Team (DART) and Cyber Crimes.

Major Warnecke developed the first Family Violence Unit for the St. Louis Police Department, and is the co-founder of the St. Louis Family Violence Council. Major Warnecke served on the Board for the Women’s SafeHouse, and she currently serves on the Board of the St. Louis Area Major Case Squad, and recently established the Department’s first Officer Wellness Unit.

In 2004, Major Warnecke established the Department’s Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) which provides Officers the tools to have positive interactions with persons suffering a mental health crisis. CIT is a community collaborative with social services, service providers and the courts.

Major Warnecke has an Associate’s degree in Criminal Investigations from Florissant Valley Community College as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management from Webster University. Major Warnecke is also a FOCUS Graduate of Leadership St. Louis.

Major Warnecke currently serves as the Commander of the Investigative Services Bureau.
