ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The St. Louis Board of Police Commissioners unanimously approved a multi-year employment agreement for Chief of Police Robert J. Tracy, reaffirming the Board’s trust and confidence in his leadership, crime reduction strategies, and the direction of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (SLMPD).
Since its first official meeting in July, the Board has worked closely with Chief Tracy to guide the Department through the historic transition to State Control, which is a citizen-led Board of Police Commissioners. Throughout that period, Chief Tracy has continued to lead the SLMPD without interruption as the men and women of the SLMPD deliver real results for public safety — a key factor in the Board’s decision.
Board of Police Commissioners President Chris Saracino said Chief Tracy is an asset to the SLMPD, the City of St. Louis, and the region.
“Under the Chief’s leadership, the brave men and women of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department are helping drive down violent crime across the city,” said President Saracino. “We want to build on this trend and make St. Louis safer, which will strengthen our entire region.”
The employment agreement, signed on Monday by President Saracino and Chief Tracy, is a three-year term, running through January 1, 2029. Under the recently signed employment agreement, Chief Tracy will receive an annual salary of $183,000.
The SLMPD has achieved measurable results under the leadership of Chief Tracy. Overall violent crime is down 42%, and homicides have declined by 31%, reflecting continued progress toward a safer St. Louis. The Board of Police Commissioners believe Chief Tracy is the right person to build on these results and are committed to giving Chief Tracy the resources to be successful.
Chief Tracy expressed his appreciation for the Board’s confidence and reaffirmed his commitment to working alongside the men and women of the SLMPD through focused crime-reduction strategies.
“I am thankful for the Board’s confidence and the opportunity to continue serving in this role,” said Chief Tracy. “This is a noble profession, and through teamwork and dedication of the men and women of the SLMPD and our partnership with the community, we are making St. Louis safer for residents and visitors alike.”
