The Crime Analysis Unit is responsible for systematically collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data from a variety of sources to provide the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department with valuable insights that support informed decision-making. Between crime reports, calls for service, arrest information and more, there is a tremendous amount of information that can be used to respond to and prevent crime. The Crime Analysis Unit reviews this information and employs statistical techniques, geographic information systems (GIS), and data visualization tools to identify crime patterns, trends, and hotspots. Once identified, the Crime Analysis Unit produces comprehensive reports to communicate their findings to the relevant SLMPD personnel. By offering a deeper understanding of the “who, what, where, when, and how” of crime, the Crime Analysis Unit helps to ensure that resources are deployed efficiently.
The Crime Analysis Unit also contributes to the proactive policing efforts of the SLMPD’s investigative units by sifting through vast amounts of information to identify links between people, places, weapons, and criminal activities. The Crime Analysis Unit employs advanced analytical tools and methodologies to help determine the structure and operations of criminal networks, detect emerging problems, and provide detectives with actionable intelligence to assist with their investigations. By using a data-driven approach, the Crime Analysis Unit enhances the SLMPD’s ability to respond to emerging crime trends in a timely, strategic manner and to conduct effective, thorough investigations.
