Attempted traffic stop leads to deadly crash

The Force Investigation Unit and Accident Reconstruction investigators were called to a deadly crash after officers attempted to stop a stolen vehicle.

Around 12:30 p.m. on June 18, officers assigned to Mobile Reserve attempted to stop a stolen vehicle near Goodfellow and St. Louis. Officers attempted to deploy spike strips but the stolen vehicle reversed to avoid driving over them and nearly hit two officers.

The vehicle fled at a high rate of speed, violating several red electric signals before crashing at the intersection of Goodfellow and Page. The collision caused the stolen vehicle to overturn. The driver of the stolen vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger of the stolen vehicle was taken into custody and transported to an area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Two occupants of the other vehicle involved in the collision were transported to an area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
