SLMPD, Harris-Stowe Sign Two Memorandum of Understanding Agreements

Both Memorandums of Understanding strengthen the critical partnership between the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department and Harris-Stowe State University, building pathways for students while recognizing the rigorous police training.

MOU 1: Harris-Stowe State University Collaboration with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department and the St. Louis Police Foundation

Harris-Stowe State University (HSSU) is proud to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (SLMPD) for the Cadet Program Scholarship. This strategic partnership aims to provide HSSU students with a unique opportunity to gain firsthand experience in law enforcement while fostering stronger community ties.

The Police Cadet Program is designed to offer HSSU students a comprehensive understanding of police operations and community policing strategies. Participants will work alongside SLMPD officers, gaining valuable insights into the criminal justice system and developing essential skills for careers in law enforcement and public safety. Upon completion of the Cadet Program students can apply for the police academy or apply for other civilian positions with SLMPD.

Cadets will participate in various aspects of police work, including ride-alongs, community engagement initiatives, and training sessions. The program is open to all HSSU students who meet the eligibility criteria, which include maintaining good academic standing and passing a background check.

MOU 2: Harris-Stowe State University Collaboration with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department for College Credit Agreement

Harris-Stowe State University (HSSU) is proud to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (SLMPD), creating an innovative pathway for police officers to receive college credit for their police academy training.

This landmark agreement acknowledges the rigorous training that SLMPD officers undergo and allows them to apply this training toward college credits at Harris-Stowe State University. The initiative is designed to support the continuing education and professional development of law enforcement officers, enhancing their skills and knowledge while facilitating their pursuit of higher education.

Through this program, SLMPD officers will be able to transfer credits earned during their police academy training toward degree programs at HSSU. This opportunity not only promotes higher education within the police force but also encourages officers to advance their careers and contribute more effectively to public safety and community relations.

The MOU signing ceremony was held on June 17, 2024, at the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department headquarters.
