District 2 officers are investigating an assault involving several people that occurred on January 1 at Steak ‘n Shake in the 1200 block of Hampton.
A preliminary investigation revealed that around 3 a.m., a group of several individuals inside the restaurant were approached by an employee who asked the group not to smoke inside the establishment. As a result, an argument ensued and escalated when a few of the individuals in the group jumped over the sales counter and into the cooking area. Other employees assisted with holding some of the individuals back as others in the group threw objects at the employees. During the commotion, one male punched two employees.
All of the individuals eventually left the restaurant and fled from the location. No one reported needing medical attention after the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
