On February 5, District 6 detectives arrested a 54-year-old man on involuntary manslaughter related to the dog attack that occurred on January 15, however, charges were refused by the Circuit Attorney’s Office due to a lack of evidence.
“The death of Gladys Anthony is a complete tragedy and St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department detectives worked with the Circuit Attorney’s Office to carefully review the facts of the case. If any new evidence comes to light, SLMPD will review it and notify the Circuit Attorney’s Office.”
The deceased woman was identified as 62-year-old Gladys Anthony1.
District 6 is investigating an incident wherein a couple was attacked by dogs on January 15 in the 5900 block of Theodore.
Shortly before 11:45 p.m., officers received ShotSpotter calls at the location, followed by calls for police help. Upon arriving, officers located a severely injured 62-year-old woman and an injured 73-year-old man surrounded by three dogs that were barking at them in their rear yard. The man, who was fending off the dogs with a broom, had previously fired shots in an attempt to distract the dogs. Responding officers were able to distract the dogs and deployed pepper spray, causing the dogs to run off.
Officers entered the yard and located the 62-year-old woman who was barely conscious and heavily bleeding. Officers were able to pull the woman inside her home where they rendered aid to the woman and applied tourniquets until the arrival of EMS. EMS transported the woman to the hospital for treatment. The 73-year-old man sustained several bites to his arms and legs but elected to seek treatment at a later time. The woman later died at the hospital while in surgery.
During a canvass of the neighborhood, officers located the dogs entering a yard at a nearby neighboring home where it was revealed to be where the dogs reside. The dogs were seized by the City’s Animal Control Division. The owner of the dogs, a 54-year-old male, is cooperating with police. The investigation remains ongoing.
- An earlier report inadvertently listed the woman’s last name as “Anderson.” It has been updated to reflect the correct last name. ↩︎
