The SLMPD Force Investigation Unit is investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting that happened on February 17, 2026 in the Patch neighborhood.
Around 8:30 a.m., SLMPD SWAT officers responded to the 8400 block of S. Broadway to execute a search warrant at a residence. Upon arriving, the SWAT officers announced their presence and gave multiple verbal commands for the occupants of the house to come out with their hands up. The commands to surrender went on for an extended period of time.
Several individuals eventually exited the home at the command of the officers. One man, 46, who was the suspect and target of the search warrant, remained inside the house despite commands from officers. SWAT officers eventually entered the house and encountered the suspect who they again gave multiple additional verbal commands to exit and drop any weapons he had. The suspect again refused and announced to officers that he had a gun.
SWAT officers continued giving orders to the man to drop his gun. One SWAT officer, in fear of his life, fired his weapon, striking the suspect. The suspect died at the scene. No officers or other people were injured during the incident. Suspected narcotics and an additional firearm were seized from the home.
The officer involved is a 39-year-old male with nine years of service on the police force. The SLMPD Force Investigation Unit is handling the ongoing investigation.
