District 4 officers responded to the 1500 block of Market, around 5:00 p.m. on July 6, after being alerted to a subject firing a gun near Friedrich Schiller Sculpture Park by an off-duty SLMPD officer who was working approved secondary employment.
Officers located a 15-year-old male who had suffered an apparent graze wound to his right elbow.
The 15-year-old was walking on 14th with a 45-year-old woman, a 43-year-old man, and another 15-year-old male when they all heard gunfire coming from north of their location.
A 59-year-old man was driving a Scion that was stopped at the red light on Market at 14th, when he heard gunshots and the sound of rounds hitting his vehicle.
Another officer observed a suspicious vehicle leaving the area at a high rate of speed after the shots were fired. A description of that vehicle was broadcast and the vehicle was stopped by an officer with our Traffic Safety Division near 18th and Olive.
A 31-year-old woman was driving the vehicle and a 28-year-old man was the front seat passenger. The off-duty officer who observed the suspect who was shooting near the sculpture park responded to the location of the traffic stop and identified the 28-year-old man as the suspect he observed shooting near the park.
The man was found to have an active Probation Violation and to be a convicted felon. He was arrested without incident.
The woman driving the vehicle was also arrested for having active warrants for her arrest.
The additional police presence in the downtown area, provided by the detail we put out every weekend as well as uniformed officers working private security for planned events in the area, coordinating with our Real Time Crime Center were vital in the quick apprehension of the suspect responsible for this incident.
EMS treated the 15-year-old with the apparent graze wound at the scene and not transported to a hospital for any further treatment. No other injuries were reported.
The investigation is ongoing.
