Death of Child in Mark Twain Neighborhood Declared Homicide

Homicide Detectives have taken over an investigation into the death of a 2-year-old boy on October 27, 2025 in the Mark Twain neighborhood.

Shortly after 10:40 p.m. on October 27, officers received a call for police help in the 4900 block of Thekla relative to an unresponsive 2-year-old boy. Shortly thereafter, a call regarding the unresponsive child was received in the area of I-70 & St. Louis Avenue. EMS responded to the location and transported the child to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Child Abuse Unit assumed the initial investigation on October 27 as is standard procedure for child deaths. The incident was deemed a suspicious death pending further investigation into the official cause of death. Two adults that were with the child were questioned and released, pending further investigation into the incident.

On October 29, 2025, the Medical Examiner’s Office advised the child had evidence of strangulation, as well as other injuries. The cause of death was declared a homicide, and the Homicide Division took over the ongoing investigation. Detectives are working to determine what led up to the child’s injuries and who is responsible. He has been identified as 2-year-old Bre’yeon Wells.
