On March 4, 2026, shortly before 3:30pm, the US Marshals were assisting the SLMPD related to an ongoing search for a homicide suspect in the 5800 block of Wilson Avenue at the Red Roof Inn.
Law enforcement announced its presence and ordered the individuals to exit the hotel room numerous times. After receiving no response, agents introduced non-lethal pepper balls and OC gas into the hotel room.

A 62-year-old male eventually exited the hotel room with a laceration to his head, that was initially believed to be a graze wound from a bullet. After further reviewing the evidence on scene, it is now believed the laceration was sustained from a pepper ball striking the man’s head. He was taken to an area hospital and treated for the non-life-threatening injury.
As law enforcement entered the hotel room, they located a 46-year-old man that had sustained a fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound. The 46-year-old died on scene.
Two firearms and a shell casing was recovered from inside the hotel room.
No shots were fired by law enforcement.
A positive identification on the 46-year-old man is pending; however, he is believed to be the target of this homicide investigation.
