Around 12 p.m. on February 11, District 6 officers were on patrol in the Penrose neighborhood when officers attempted a traffic stop on a Nissan Rogue but it fled from officers at a high rate of speed. Officers attempted a traffic stop; but disengaged due to safety concerns.
Shortly after disengaging, SLMPD received a call for a shooting in the 4900 block of Penrose. When officers arrived on scene, they found the same Nissan Rogue that had previously fled from officers.
A preliminary investigation reveals the driver, a 20-year-old man, and passenger, a 22-year-old man, exited the vehicle after parking. The 22-year-old passenger then accidentally shot himself in the groin as he exited.
The passenger was transported to the hospital and is stable.
The driver was arrested and found to be a federally convicted felon currently on parole.
A firearm and the vehicle were seized.
