Around 8 p.m. on February 2, 2026, District 5 officers were called to a home in the 5700 block of Waterman for a report of a male suspect threatening a woman with a gun. As officers arrived, they located the suspect and woman arguing in the doorway of a porch.
As one of the responding officers, who is 34 years old with 7 years of law enforcement experience, approached the home to investigate, the suspect shot the woman in front of the officer.
The officer retrieved his department issued firearm and fired at the suspect after the suspect shot the woman. The suspect shot back at the officer, leading to an exchange of gunfire.

The suspect was shot during the incident. The officer was not injured. The suspect’s gun was recovered at the scene.
EMS responded and transported the woman to a hospital where she died. She has been identified as 67-year-old Mary Jackson. The suspect, a 68-year-old man, was taken to a hospital where he is in critical/unstable condition. The two were in a domestic relationship and both resided at the residence.
The SLMPD Force Investigation Unit is handling the ongoing investigation.
