The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department’s Traffic Division proudly honored Retired Motorman Wendell “Dick” Hess, who served from 1965 to 1987.
In recent days, Mr. Hess and his family were advised by doctors to prepare for the final stage of his life following a serious medical procedure. Wanting to celebrate his service while he is still with us, the family reached out to the SLMPD Traffic Division—and our officers responded without hesitation.

Traffic Officers Moran and Tenorio coordinated a heartfelt tribute, showcasing the modern technology and advancements used by today’s Motormen. Their visit brought smiles, memories, and an outpouring of appreciation for a man whose legacy helped shape the very unit they serve today.
Retired officers, Deputies from the Randolph County Sheriff’s Department, and members of Mr. Hess’s family gathered for the occasion, making it a moving tribute to a life of service.
Chief of Police Robert J. Tracy also shared a personal letter with Mr. Hess, writing:
“Although we’ve never had the pleasure of meeting, I’ve come to know your story—and your legacy—through those who speak of you with deep respect and admiration. Your story is one of strength, sacrifice, and service. You came from humble beginnings, worked hard, and served the City of St. Louis with honor.”
The SLMPD extends its heartfelt gratitude to Retired Motorman Hess. Thank you for your service, Sir. Your legacy lives on in every officer who continues the proud tradition of the motors unit.
