Just after 5:30 a.m. on Monday, September 22, 2025, District 2 officers responded to a call for shots fired into a an apartment unit in the 1600 block of Hampton.

Initial officers responded to investigate and located ballistic damage. As additional officers arrived, they located a man armed with a gun and alerted officers that were inside to a suspect approaching the entrance of the loft building with a gun. The suspect fired a shot moments later — nearly striking an officer.

Officers demanded the suspect, a 31-year-old man, drop the weapon several times. The suspect started to flee to the side of the building and an officer discharged their weapon. After a brief foot chase, the suspect surrendered and was taken into custody. The suspect was not injured.

A preliminary investigation reveals the suspect, who lives at the loft building, entered a neighbor’s apartment, took a firearm and started firing several shots inside his neighbor’s unoccupied unit. The suspect also shot the door of another apartment unit before his interaction with officers.

Two additional officers that were responding to assist were injured while climbing a fence.

The Force Investigations Unit responded to the scene and will investigate the incident.
